Akpabio affirms President’s commitment to united Nigeria, Benue gov, CAN urge patriotism

President Tinubu and Godswill Akpabio.

President Bola Tinubu is focused on ensuring that Nigeria remains an inseparable and indivisible entity, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has assured.

At an inter-denominational service to mark the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day yesterday in Abuja, the Akwa Ibom State ex-governor, who noted that the corporate existence of the country lies in its rich cultural, religious and ethnic diversity, appealed to Nigerians to embrace unity.

He lauded the fallen heroes for ensuring that Nigeria remained indivisible.
Akpabio implored Christendom and relevant stakeholders to support the Tinubu government in tackling the nation’s numerous challenges.

His words: “The unity of Nigeria came at a great price. The sustenance and defence of this unity rest on the shoulders of the men and women of the armed forces, and the true weight of loss is carried by families and dependents of these fallen heroes. If only we could share the pain they feel, then we would truly understand the imperative of eschewing insecurity and violence in all forms.

“Year 2023 was an eventful one, marked by general elections and a change in leadership. Our nation is still grappling with the effects of overdue multi-sectoral reforms to propel us forward and position Nigeria among the greatest nations of the world.
“I urge support for the government of President Bola Tinubu during this crucial time, as we strive to achieve the Nigeria of our dreams. In this regard, I reiterate the President’s assurance that ‘our tough times will not last’, and we should renew our hope in a greater Nigeria.
“Now. is the time for all stakeholders to set aside our differences, regardless of religion, ethnicity or political affiliation, and come together to strategise on the way forward for this great nation that our gallant men and women of the armed forces paid for, and continue to pay, the ultimate price to preserve.
“It is also a time for a sober reflection to take stock of past events such as the civil war, and to reflect on current challenges like the war on insurgency, incessant attacks on innocent Nigerians, spate of kidnappings across the country. We must reflect on their causes and work together to prevent future occurrences.”

Besides, Benue State chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Bishop Wilfred Anagbe, has said the event holds a special place in the hearts of Nigerians.

At a programme, organized by the body, in conjunction with the Benue State government in Makurdi, yesterday, the cleric observed that the ceremony serves as a reminder of the selfless sacrifices members of the armed forces gave to the country, urging prayers for the late officers and those still in service.

In his sermon, Archbishop of All Nations Evangelism Ministries, Yimam Orkwagh, canvassed forgiveness.

He beseeched Benue people and Nigerians on unity, love and forgiveness.

Governor Hyacinth Alia, on his part, charged the society to honour ex-service men.
According to him, meeting the needs of those, who have put their lives in line of duty to keep the country safe, would cushion the traumatic experiences in the land.

He sought prayers for families of the deceased officers, noting that their bravery and sacrifices have ensured the corporate existence of the country.

The governor, who described the event as a day to honour services and unwavering commitment of the armed forces to the security of the nation, also charged the people to use the occasion to ensure peace nationwide.

Also, The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja has promised Nigerians that insecurity would be tamed this year.

He was equally reassured of the force’s commitment to democracy and rule of law.
The military chief canvassed improved welfare for officers, families as well as better accommodation across barracks and cantonments all through the year.

Lagbaja, who spoke yesterday  during the  Nigerian Army Finance Corps  West African  Social Activities popularly  called ‘WASA’,  reiterated President Tinubu’s zeal for better living of officers.

In his welcome address, Chief of Accounts and Budget, Maj.-Gen.  AA Fayemiwo, said this year, the Nigerian Army Finance Corps would focus on strengthening financial technology, budgeting, auditing and training to enhance capacity of its men, as well as ensuring that resources are judiciously deployed.

In his vote of thanks, Commander, Command Finance Corps, Maj.-Gen. MM Galadima, commended the COAS for his commitment to transforming the force into a well-trained, equipped and highly motivated body to achieve its constitutional responsibilities.
