Bamidele seeks equity, fairness in choice of N’Assembly leadership
A coalition of over 100 civil society organisations, under the auspices of Nigerian Human Rights Community (NHRC), has applauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the people of Ekiti State for a peaceful and credible House of Assembly election last Saturday.
One of the programme officers, Taiwo Adeleye, while giving preliminary report on INEC’s performance, said there was a fair gender representation in the polls, which featured six female candidates on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for seats in the 26-member Ekiti Assembly.
MEANWHILE, the senator representing Ekiti Central District at the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele, has called for equity, justice and fairness in the choice of the leadership of the 10th National Assembly for peace and progress of the country.
Bamidele, who spoke, yesterday, during an interactive session with newsmen in his country home of Iyin-Ekiti in Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Council, noted that the leadership of the National Assembly should not be an exclusive preserve of any region or religion.
The lawmaker, however, added that in the present circumstance that the number one and two citizens are Muslims, people are genuinely concerned that the number three position should go elsewhere.
He said the choice of who would be the principal officers of the Senate from the South-West would rest squarely on the four ranking senators from the zone to decide when the 10th session of the National Assembly is inaugurated.
