Employees renovate dilapidated school

In the heart of Lakowe lies Iwerekun Community Senior High School, where the dream of getting a good education is extremely threatened by poor infrastructure. This was the fate of the students at the high school before ‘Y’ello Care’.

Things appear as bleak as the current state of the school building and classrooms as they go daily for their lessons. Iwerekun Community High School built in the heart of Ibeju-Lekki, Epe, by the government, has seen several generations of children from the Lakowe community pass through it.

Over the years, the once shining school building became dilapidated due to lack of proper maintenance to foster learning. A first glance at the school will show you broken tables, chairs, ceilings and partitions shabbily designed to demarcate the classrooms as well as naked roofs, pillars and many other deplorable parts of the precarious ‘construction’

Enter the MTN Y’ello Care initiative, an annual campaign holding for 30 days this year, where MTN employees contribute funds, devoting time and resources to specific social impact projects within their communities.

This year, which marks the 17th edition of Y’ello Care, the staff decided to focus their resources on engendering a significant change in Iwerekun community by renovating the Community High School to a state that guarantees effective learning.

The Y’ello employees are keen on providing both current and incoming students at the school a conducive and safe learning environment. Every MTN employees believe every child deserves quality education regardless of socio-economic background.

With renovation plans in place, 996 current students at the high school will have an opportunity to learn in a better environment. In addition, MTN workers will be supporting KNOSK Charity Education Initiative for students and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)’s Safe School Initiative, spearheaded by the National Safe School Response Coordination Centre.
