Says its medical varsity to kick off this year with direct entry students
Lagos State Government, yesterday, said that about N849.5 million had been expended on scholarship and bursary awards in 2023.

The state’s Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, disclosed this during the ongoing yearly ministerial media briefing to mark the first year of the second term of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Sule said that in alignment with the THEMES plus agenda of the administration, which prioritises inclusive development, a special scholarship for inclusion was unveiled.

The commissioner, however, disclosed that the state’s University of Health and Medical Sciences would kick off this year with the first set of students admitted for the 2024/25 academic session.

He said that the state government would admit students for the 2024/25 academic session, as the three components needed for take-off had been met.

He added that the state government is committed to the project and had given all the support for its takeoff.

This initiative is designed to support People Living With Disabilities (PLWD) and the multidimensionally poor, empowering them to pursue their educational aspirations and contribute meaningfully to society. It is crucial to note that the special scholarship for inclusion extends beyond Lagos State indigenes. It encompasses all residents enrolled in Lagos State-owned tertiary institutions, irrespective of their state of origin. This underscores our commitment to fostering inclusivity and providing equal opportunities for all residents of Lagos State.

“As per the People with Disability Law of Lagos State, which promises free education for all PLWDs, I am pleased to announce that the Lagos State Government has allocated budgetary provisions in the 2024 budget to fulfil this mandate via the introduction of the special scholarship for PLWDs. We are committed to ensuring that every individual, regardless of their abilities or socio-economic background, has access to quality education.”
