Purpose and benefits of dream – Part 1

Lawrence Achudume

God does not create or do a thing without a purpose. The fact that man spends three years out of his lifetime dreaming means there is a great purpose for it. We all should dream for at least an hour or more in a day and if God has made us so as to spend such time dreaming then, surely He has a purpose in it. All through history, we find that people have received help through dream.

“And he said, Hear now my words: if there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known to him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.” Numbers 12:6
It is the desire of God to always speak to His children and He needs our total commitment and attention to do so. But most time during our awake period we could become too busy that things and business of life take so much of our attention. And as such it makes it difficult for our spirit to connect to God. Therefore, God in His mercy choose a time when a man is calm, quiet and at peace; and He found all of these at that time we are asleep.

“…and that distress her, shall be a dream of a night vision.” Isaiah 29:7c

God found it worthy to come in that manner called dream and speak to us when our mind is still.“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth” Psalm 46:10.

The young and the old dream, kings and peasants all dream at different times. This is as stated by Prophet Joel and emphasised by Apostle Peter in the book of Acts,

“And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams” Acts 2:17

“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions” Joel 2:28

Dreams are not restricted to only a category of people but different sets of people dream. It ranges from the prophet of God who delivers God’s message to His people as well as false or fake prophets who have the intention to deceive and mislead people.

“The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? Saith the LORD,” Jeremiah 23:28.

“Therefore hearken not ye to your prophets, nor to your diviners, nor to your dreamers, nor to your enchanters, nor to your sorcerers, which speak unto you, saying, Ye shall not serve the king of Babylon,” Jeremiah 27:9.

“For the idols have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: therefore, they went their way as a flock, they were troubled, because there was no shepherd,” Zechariah 10:2.
