Purpose and benefits of dream – Part 2

Pastor Lawrence Achudume
We must note that we do not dream because we are believers in Christ, unbelievers also dream. For example, in Jude 1:8, the Bible says, “Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise domination, and speak evil of dignities.”

Dreams are common to all men of every race and colour. Dream is a universal phenomenon and God uses dreams for the following purposes:

• To Give Direction and Instruction

As believers, it is of utmost importance that we seek the mind of God before we attempt anything in life. And in the process of seeking His mind, God could most times show us His will and desire concerning such matters through dreams. This was manifest like in the case of Pharaoh and Egypt; God gave specific instruction to Pharaoh in dream in order to save Egypt from famine (Genesis 41). He also revealed Himself to Joseph the husband of Mary in a dream to leave Bethlehem and head for Egypt.

“And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him,” Mathew 2:13.

It took only an encounter in a dream to dissolve Joseph from putting his wife, Mary away because of the divine pregnancy of Jesus.

“Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.

But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost,” Matthew 1:19-20.

We also see in Abraham’s call to leave his family and land of nativity to a land God will show him and where God was to make him a great nation.

“And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,

And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land, which I shall shew thee.

Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell,” Acts 7:2-4.

If you handle your dream life with care and give it due attention, you can be sure that you will always have light for every issue that looks like darkness around you. A life that gives priority to dreams cannot be out of ideas and instructions on issues of life. I am aware that there are dreams that come to distract you or that are purely demonic and from the devil and its agents. They also should be given the necessary attention they deserve such that they do not hinder nor affect you negatively because in this too, the light will shine on your path.

• To Encourage
In trying times when the mind is depressed and hope is almost gone. As believers, a dream can be all you need to be at peace and reassured of God’s promises and plans for your life. God did this for Jacob at a point when he was instructed on where to take a wife. He had left Isaac his father to embark on a journey, he had no idea of how it will end. And in the midst of this, God gave him…in a dream to assure him of His promises for him, which gave him the needed strength at the point in his life to forge ahead.
