Rights repression worsening in Nigeria, says watchdog

The Human Rights Watch (HRW) has said repression of citizens is worsening in Nigeria.

In its 2022 World Report, which reviewed human rights trends and developments in more than 100 countries, the international non-governmental organisation said the ban on Twitter in June 2021 was indicative of worsening human rights issues in the most populous black nation.

The ban followed the deleting of a controversial tweet from President Muhammadu Buhari by the microblogging site. The suspension was eventually lifted seven months later.

But in its 752-page report, the 32nd edition of its World Report launched on Monday, HRW said the embargo was a sign of human rights repression in the country.
