The supernatural God – Part 1

Pastor Austen C. Ukachi

Why do we describe God as supernatural? God is supernatural because He is not a man, but a Spirit. To God, nothing is more natural than the realm of the supernatural.

His many attributes distinguish Him as supernatural that is, beyond the ordinary. No other God possess His attributes. God is immutable. As Malachi 3:6 says: “I, the Lord, do not change.” (NIV). Or yet still, as we read from 1 Samuel 15:26: “He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind; for He is not a human being, that He should change His mind.” God is not a human being, so He does not change His mind.

God’s immutability makes him supernatural. Charles Spurgeon, the effervescent writer, gives us a beautiful description of the immutability of God in this way: “We cannot tell you what Godhead is. We do not know what substance that is which we call God. It is an existence, it is a being; but what that is, we know not. However, whatever it is, we call it His essence, and that essence never changes. The substance of mortal things is ever-changing … All creatures change! Man, especially as to his body, is always undergoing revolution … But God is perpetually the same. He is not composed of any substance or material, but is spirit-pure, essential, and ethereal spirit-and, therefore, He is immutable. He remains everlastingly the same. There are no furrows on His eternal brow. Mark you, His essence did not undergo any change when it became united with the manhood…”

God is unchanged in His love? He loves as much now as He did then, and when the sun shall cease to shine, and moons to show their feeble light, He still shall love on forever and forever.

With regards to His plans and purpose, God changes not in His plans. God altereth not his plans; why should He? He is Almighty and, therefore, can perform His pleasure. He said in His word: “The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of His heart to all generations,” (Psalms 33:11 NKJV).

God is unchanging in his promises. For, “by two immutable things in which it is impossible for God to lie,” he hath signed, confirmed and sealed every promise of His.

God is all-powerful, that is Omnipotent. Just as He was powerful then, and His arm is not disabled or weak; so, He is now. He remains the same giant and the strength of His soul stands the same forever.

God is unchanged in His wisdom. He is unchanged in His wisdom, He knows as much now as ever, neither more nor less; He has the same consummate skill,
He is unchanged, blessed be his name, in his justice. Just and holy was He in the past; just and holy is He now. He is unchanged in His truth; He has promised, and He brings it to pass; He had said it, and it shall be done. He varies not in the goodness, generosity, and benevolence of his nature.

Amos 7:18-19 describes the supernatural nature and attribute of God this way: “Who is a God like You, pardoning iniquity and passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in mercy. He will again have compassion on us, and will subdue our iniquities. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea,” (Micah 7:18-19 NKJV). This can only be said about our supernatural God.
