You’re not inferior to anyone, ANAN tells members

Osisioma

Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) has urged members not to feel inferior to anyone with different professional qualifications.

Its president, Prof. Chuka Osisioma, gave the charge at the end of the association’s first session of Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) programme, where 421 new members were inducted, in Abuja.

With the theme: “Understanding Financial Disclosures On Sustainability,” the programme highlighted responsibilities of accountants in entrenching a transparent financial disclosure system, particularly in filing tax returns.

For decades, there has been a cold war between Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and ANAN on which professional body is best for graduates of accountancy and related courses.

The two bodies have also been fighting for superiority and recognition from government, corporate bodies and aspiring professional accountants.

But speaking to the inductees, Osisioma stated: “ANAN has come to the point that international bodies have started seeking our cooperation. The world is recognising us knowing that we have something to offer. Our founding fathers have put something on ground and you are inheriting the heritage.

“A lot of people act as if ANAN is inferior. They hide it. They don’t want people to know that they belong to ANAN until they are being assessed and told that they require a professional affiliation. You don’t have any reason to be inferior. You have a degree and one of the best professional qualifications out there.”

While warning members against unethical conduct, the ANAN president charged the inductees to associate with branches, participate in activities and programmes and observe ethics while performing their duties.

Chief Executive Officer of the association, Dr. Kayode Olushola Fasua, described ANAN as one of the top five professional accounting bodies in Africa, appealing to the inductees to cherish the body all times.
